Michael Bibi’s whole story is proof that tech house doesn’t need to be cold to hit hard. Born in London in 1990 to a dance teacher and blues guitarist Robin Bibi, music was basically wired into him from the jump. He started DJing in 2011 after some time traveling, and like most people breaking into this industry, it wasn’t instant — he had to grind his way up through London’s party scene before things clicked.
That grind paid off big in 2015 when he co-founded Solid Grooves with fellow DJ PAWSA. What started as a party brand turned into one of the most respected tech house labels going, eventually taking home Best Label at DJ Mag’s 2023 Best of British awards. Bibi’s own breakthrough moment came in 2018 with “Hanging Tree,” a track built around a Hunger Games sample that went properly viral and turned him into one of the scene’s genuine headliners overnight.
The recognition kept stacking up from there — Mixmag’s cover mix in April 2020, a BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix that June, and a run of tracks like “Otto’s Chant,” “Lemonade,” and “Shaolin Dreams” that cemented his sound: groovy, bass-heavy, built for peak time but never soulless.
What makes Bibi’s story hit different is what came after. A 2023 cancer diagnosis pulled him away from the decks, and his return in 2024 was genuinely emotional for anyone following along. He came back and threw the “One Life” charity event at Finsbury Park, pulling in 45,000 people and raising £120,000 for cancer charity — using his own platform to give back in the most direct way possible. In April 2025 he released “Sungazing” with Alexa Sunshine Rose, a track that landed differently knowing what he’d just been through. He’s picked up hardware along the way too, including Best Tech House DJ at the 2019 DJ Awards and the 2024 “Play It Back” award. Bibi isn’t just a Solid Grooves figurehead anymore — he’s one of the most respected and genuinely well-liked names in UK tech house, and his comeback story is one of the best in the scene.
