Destructo

Updated Aug 20, 2026

Gary Richards, better known behind the decks as Destructo, is one of those rare figures in dance music who’s shaped the culture as much from the boardroom as from the booth. Before he was headlining festivals under the Destructo name, Richards built HARD Events into one of the defining forces in American EDM, launching parties and festivals like HARD Summer and HARD Haunted Mansion that became rites of passage for a generation of fans on the West Coast and beyond. He also co-created Holy Ship!, the festival-at-sea concept that basically invented a whole subgenre of dance music travel.

Richards sold HARD to Live Nation back in 2012 and stuck around as CEO for years afterward, steering the brand through a period where EDM was exploding into the mainstream. When his contract situation got shaky heading toward 2017, the response from the community said everything about how much he mattered to the scene. Artists like Skrillex and Boys Noize spoke up in his defense, and fans organized petitions and hashtag campaigns to keep him at the helm. Eventually Richards did part ways with Live Nation, moving on to LiveStyle, the rebuilt version of SFX that oversees festivals including Tomorrowland, Mysteryland, and Electric Zoo.

As Destructo, Richards has never been shy about mixing his love of hip-hop into his production work. His 2014 single “Party Up” featuring YG became a genuine crossover moment, pulling in fans from both the rap and dance worlds and getting remix treatment from acts like GTA. That willingness to blend scenes rather than stay in a lane is basically the throughline of his whole career, whether he’s producing a track or booking a festival lineup.

What sets Destructo apart from a lot of his peers is that he’s lived multiple lives inside the same industry: tastemaker, label guy, promoter, and artist, often all at once. He’s been candid in interviews about the grind of doing all of it, once summing up his career in a DJ Mag feature with the simple idea that you work hard and you play harder. That’s basically the Destructo ethos in a sentence.

Decades into his run, Gary Richards remains one of the most respected builders in American dance music culture, someone whose fingerprints are all over the festival landscape fans take for granted today.
