NYC Techno Club Basement Bans Smart Glasses From Its Dancefloor
Basement, the Queens techno institution under Knockdown Center, will now turn away — and potentially permanently ban — anyone who brings smart glasses into the venue.

New York’s most talked-about techno club just drew a hard line on wearable tech. Basement, the Berghain-inspired spot tucked under Knockdown Center in Queens, announced last week that smart glasses are now completely banned from the venue — and getting caught with a pair could get you banned for good.

The club broke the news on its Instagram, and the reasoning is pretty hard to argue with. “Our no photo / no video policy exists to protect the privacy, safety and freedom of everyone on our dance floor,” the statement reads. “Devices that allow discreet recording are incompatible with that policy.” Anyone who shows up with smart glasses — wearing them or just carrying them in a bag — “will be asked to leave and may be permanently banned,” according to the announcement.
If you’ve ever been to Basement, you know the no-camera rule isn’t a suggestion there. The club has built its whole reputation on keeping the dancefloor a phones-down, nobody’s-watching kind of space, complete with the infamous “vibe check” at the door. Smart glasses just close a loophole that regular phone policies couldn’t touch.
And honestly, it’s a loophole that needed closing. Camera glasses like Ray-Ban Metas are designed to look like normal eyewear, and while they technically have a little LED that lights up when they’re recording, reports have shown people finding ways to disable or cover it. In a dark club, you’d never know you were being filmed. For a venue whose entire pitch is that you can lose yourself for eight hours without ending up in someone’s story, that’s an existential problem.
Basement appears to be one of the first major American clubs to spell out a smart-glasses policy this explicitly, but don’t expect it to be the last. Wearable cameras are only getting smaller and more common, and underground venues everywhere are wrestling with the same question: how do you protect a dancefloor when surveillance can walk in on someone’s face?
European clubs answered the phone question years ago with camera stickers and outright device bans, and plenty of US promoters have followed. The smart-glasses era is going to force round two of that conversation — and Basement just wrote the template for how the strict version looks.
So if you’ve got a pair of Metas and a ticket to a Basement party, leave the glasses at home. The club has made it very clear it isn’t kidding.
