Thursday, June 26th will mark the first Thank You Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. There's a lot of reasons to be excited for Thank You – only a few of them include the star-studded lineup. Tiesto, Above & Beyond, Krewella, Cedric Gervais, and Alvin Risk will all play in effort to raise money and awareness for children living in extreme poverty worldwide.
The Cause: Global Citizen, in partnership with the World Childhood Foundation, leads the world community in education and philanthropy. The Thank You Festival will be a massive effort to raise awareness of the ongoing suffering around the world, and a celebration of U.S. foreign aid in helping to cut child deaths by half in the last 25 years. In that time, new polio diagnoses have been reduced from 1,000 a day – to just 1. So much progress has been made is such a relatively short period of time, but there's still work to do: 6.6 million children under the age of 5 die annually.
“To become a global citizen, we must extend our compassion beyond our borders. The United States has played a pivotal role in leading child survival and protection efforts worldwide and this event celebrates that, but this is also a chance to educate the younger generation and motivate our leaders to act. The bottom line is increased investment in child survival initiatives could ensure that no child dies for the lack of a 30 cent vaccine.” -Hugh Evans, CEO of The Global Poverty Project.
Thank You Festival will also host World Childhood Foundation ambassador: Princess Madeleine of Sweden. She spoke on the problem of child poverty: “Every child deserves a happy childhood. Yet, children around the world still face insecurity in the form of abuse and sexual exploitation. Together we can help children live a childhood free from disease, violence and abuse on the path to a sustainable world without extreme poverty by 2030.”
The Music: There's always going to be debate and favoritism in a sub-genre-stacked industry. It's inspiring to see such a variety of acts coming together to work towards one purpose. Krewella are known for their ultra-intense live performances, and harmonic vocals. They were ranked 44th in DJ Mag's top-100 poll in 2013. Only four other American dance music producers were voted higher.
Above & Beyond the world's most inspiring trance act. Anyone who has experienced an Above & Beyond festival set would gladly tell you how it changed their life. Their 2011 hit “Sun & Moon” was placed No. 21 on Mixmag's list of greatest dance songs ever. Last year they came in at No. 17 in DJ Mag's top-100 poll, and are perennial top-20 finishers. Also in 2013, Dash Berlin World ranked Above & Beyond as the 13th most popular DJs of all time.
Tiesto might not be producing trance anymore, but that doesn't stop him from elevating crowds of 100,000 to new levels of energy. He was voted the No. 4 DJ by DJ Mag and also No. 4 most popular DJ of all time by Dash Berlin World. Despite having just released his fifth studio album; a house/indie-infused record titled “A Town Called Paradise”, Tiesto is still in touch with his trance-side; playing Mixmag's No. 2 greatest dance song of all time, “Adagio for Strings”, in it's original version at EDC Las Vegas, 2014.
In 2011 Mixmag released a highly anticipated list of the top-10 greatest DJs to ever live. Guess who No. 1 was? Tiesto; leading other legends such as Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, and Paul van Dyk. Despite a veteran career, Tiesto hasn't lost a step in his production or live performances. Whether he's spinning trance, house, electro, or trap… Tiesto is the world's greatest headliner of all time.
Tiesto on working with the WCF: “Through my work with the World Childhood Foundation, I've learned about the millions of kids who are battling abuse and even dying from diseases that have known cures. I hope all my fans will join me in working with these amazing organizations to help these children all around the world live and become healthy and strong so they can enjoy their childhoods.”
Also on the bill is Grammy-award winning producer Cedric Gervais. Gervais hit super-stardom in 2013 when his remix of Summertime Sadness went ultra-viral. Along with Tiesto, Krewella, Above & Beyond, and Gervais, Alvin Risk will be playing. Risk is a cross-over DJ who mixes multiple genres of dance music. He puts an imaginative spin on mainstream dubstep, as well as a dirty feel to typical house. Nobody can afford to show up late and miss any of this.
Dance music is frequently associated with peace and love. Thank You Festival takes these ideals to a new level. This is exactly what the music should be about; giving back. We are hear for the love of art, but also to give, to help, and to care for one another. These principals have to flow beyond the festival gates and into the world community. This is DJs uniting in one place, on one day, for one cause; to help the world to become a better place. This is the greatest single-day dance music event ever. This is Thank You Festival.
